AfDB and Cameroon Sign Loan and Grant Agreements for Water and Sanitation Programme

The AfDB and Cameroon on June 29, 2010, in Tunis signed an UA 10 million ADF loan agreement and a UA 5 million grant agreement.

The grant resources will come from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI).

The loan and grant will help in the implementation of projects in four regions in the country - North West, West, South West and South.

"The project's implementation will help improve water and sanitation access rate in rural areas from 33% to 60% for water and from 17% to 22% for sanitation," OWAS director, Ali Kies, said, adding that "The population will benefit from a massive training and sensitization campaign on hygiene. The project's impact will lead to a huge reduction in the incidence of diseases," he added.

For his part, Cameroon's Economy and Planning minister who also serves as the county's governor on the Bank's Board, Louis Paul Motaze, said that the project was of particular importance to the government. "Indeed, this is a pilot project which would eventually lead to a major water and sanitation program in the ten regions of Cameroon," he added.

The Bank Group's portfolio in Cameroon excluding multinational projects comprises of 12 active operations with cumulative net commitments of UA 223 million. About 30% of the amount is channeled to the water and sanitation.
