Nigerian to Host Maiden ECOWAS U-23 Games in September

Abuja - Nigeria — Twelve of the 15 member states of ECOWAS have indicated their willingness to participate in the maiden edition of the ECOWAS under 23 games to be hosted by Nigeria from 2nd September 2010. Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana. Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo will participate in the four event festival which will take place in Abuja, and run for a forth night. They would be contesting for honors in athletics, handball, volleyball and traditional wrestling for which ECOWAS already hosts two regional competitions in Dakar and Niamey.

Eleven of the countries would be participating in athletics, eight in handball, nine in volleyball and nine in traditional wrestling in two categories of male and female. The Games is one of the activities being organized by the ECOWAS Commission to use the medium of sports to create greater understanding among the youth of the region, enable member states to develop the sport talents of the youth. It would also provide an opportunity to inculcate the essence of the ECOWAS 2020 of a citizen-centred Community on the participants and prepare them for the next edition of the African Games.
