Ecowas And Indian to Strenthen Their Collaboration

Abuja - Nigeria — The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho on Monday, 25th October 2010 hailed India's emergence as one of the leading economies of the world as " one of the miracles of the 20th century."

During a meeting held with the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Mahesh Sachdev, the President praised the country for offering so share its development experience with West Africa, particularly its offer of capacity building support which holds great potential for contributing to the development of the region. He hailed a forthcoming meeting of African Regional Economic Communities (REC's) to be hosted by India between the 15th and 16th November 2010 as an 'exciting opportunity to share experiences' on the important issue of development.

Ambassador Gbeho is expected to deliver an address at the REC's meeting. He expressed the hope that the partnership between the Commission and India would be mutually rewarding and looked forward to increased Indian investment in West Africa that would help stimulate the regional economy and also create employment.

The High Commissioner used the opportunity of the visit to present an invitation for the participation of ECOWAS in the REC's meeting regarded as a preparatory forum ahead of the second Africa-India Forum scheduled for next year in Africa. He said that India's successful combination of democracy and development has shown that they are not mutually exclusive.

He added that in spite of the country's remarkable development, it is still developing country just like countries of West Africa with which it wants to share its development experience. While describing the existing collaboration between ECOWAS and India as 'extremely important,' the High Commissioner offered 44 Indian institutions to ECOWAS for capacity building training in advanced ICT and other areas.
