Tenth African Water Facility Governing Council Meeting to Hold in Addis Ababa

Tunis- The 3rd African Water Week to be held in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia from 22-26 November 2010 provides a good opportunity for the African Water Facility (AWF) to hold its 10th Governing Council meeting on 24 November 2010.

The Governing Council meeting provides special platforms to discuss issues and challenges facing Africa's water sector and to provide advice and recommendations that will guide the facility's future activities and initiatives with a view to meeting the challenges. The AWF's Governing Council comprises 13 members (5 representatives from the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), 5 representatives from the donor group, 1 representative from the African Development Bank, 1 representative from NEPAD, and 1 representative from UN-Water).

In its capacity as an African initiative and AMCOW's privileged instrument, the Facility has added value to the water sector by playing a lead role and engaging with stakeholders across the continent. Since its creation in 2004, it has developed into a successful institution and built a solid portfolio of 66 projects spread across 50 countries, with a total value of 79 millions Euros. A recent independent institutional assessment of the Facility completed in October 2010, revealed that it has developed the following valuable assets over the years: diverse portfolio, innovative and quality projects, ability to support fragile States, scaling up capacity, support to, and unique interaction with applicants, well rooted in Africa, a substantial accumulation of knowledge, sound management, and skilled and motivated staff.

To better respond to the main strategic objectives corresponding to national as well as regional needs, the AWF has structured and aligned its activities to the African Water Vision and the 2008 African Union Heads of State Sham el Sheikh Commitments through interventions in water governance, investments to meet water needs, and improving water knowledge. The AWF also pays particular attention to cross-cutting issues such as gender and socio-economic considerations, and the impact of climate variability and change. It has developed a unique set of operating procedures to ensure project quality, relevance and sustainability in all its interventions.
