Observer Mission for the Second Round of the 2010 Presidential Election in Guinea

Abuja - Nigeria — Following the first round of the Guinean presidential election held on 27 June 2010 and in conformity with the Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the President of ECOWAS Commission, H.E. James Victor Gbeho, deployed an Observer Mission to monitor the second round of this presidential election.

Led by Professor Theodore Holo, President of the High Court of Justice of Benin, this Mission seeks to ensure a smooth electoral process and guarantee a free, transparent and credible election. Ninety (90) observers from different and varied expertise were mobilized in this regard from all the ECOWAS Member States, with the exception of Guinea.

Thus, the Mission comprised inter alia Community Parliamentarians, members of the ECOWAS Council of the Wise, lawyers, Civil Society election experts, members of National Electoral Commissions from the region as well as Ambassadors of ECOWAS Member States accredited to Guinea.

The Observers will be deployed in the eight (8) administrative regions of Guinea (Conakry, Kindia, Labe, Faranah, Mamou, Kankan, Boke and Nzerekore) in order to observe and monitor all the electoral operations of the second round.

This second round of the presidential election will be held on Sunday, 7 November 2010 and it will oppose the Chairman of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG), Cellou Dalein Diallo and the Chairman of the Rally of the People of Guinea (RPG).

The ECOWAS Commission urges candidates, political party leaders as well as their supporters and sympathizers to exercise restrain so that the poll takes place in peace, tranquility and serenity.
