Abuja - Nigeria — Some 70 participants are expected to take part in a two-day workshop which will begin on Thursday, 27th January 2911 in Accra, Ghana to ensure the integration of climate change, environment and sustainable development in policies, strategies, programmes and projects.
The workshop is designed to enable West Africa take stock of efforts in ECOWAS Member States in the promotion of sustainable development, taking account of climate change as well as considering the appropriate approach to better embrace issues of green economy and sustainable development. Specifically, they include conducting an overview of the approach of sustainable development since the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 at the national, regional and global levels by making an inventory of follow- up to Chapter 8, Agenda 21 of the Rio conference and the Johannesburg Plan of Action adopted in 2002. They also include analyzing impacts of climate change on development areas in West Africa, sharing leadership development strategies for integrating climate change into policy strategies and programmes as well as improving understanding of the reconciliation of sustainable development and green economy.
Participants from ECOWAS Member States will include representatives of the Ministries of Environment, Commerce and National Development and Planning. They will also include representatives of the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Parliament, the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Science Application and Dissemination Institute, Lead Africa, ACMAD, PACJA and AGRHYMET.
Organized by the ECOWAS Commission in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the workshop closely follows a similar one on commerce and environment which is holding from 24th to 26th January 2011, also in Accra.
