A delegation comprising three Executive Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will undertake a consultation mission to Niger from 17-21 March 2011, as part of the Bank's Executive Directors' study tours to Regional Member Countries (RMCs).

The AfDB's 2010-2012 program in Niger focuses on good governance and economic reforms. It is based on two important poverty reduction strategy pillars: rural development through water resources mobilization and infrastructure development, including social infrastructure.

The AfDB's current portfolio in Niger includes 13 operations (grants and loans), with 9 projects amounting to UA 122 million or USD 183 million (about CFAF 91 billion). Rural development tops the list, accounting for 58% of total operations; followed by transportation (18%), water (12%) and social sector (10%). The sectoral allocations reflect the Bank's 2008 strategic orientations which prioritized infrastructure (rural water and sub-regional transportation).

The Executive Directors will have a unique opportunity to observe activities on ground and discuss some of the many development challenges facing the country. They will also review adopted strategies or policies, and actions required to consolidate and deepen policy dialogue with RMCs, donors, private sector and civil society organizations.

The visit aims to convey a clear message with regards to the AfDB Group's assistance strategy, its priorities and areas where dialogue with the authorities at national, provincial or municipal government is most needed to maximize synergies. Exchange of views will help to improve aid effectiveness and development results of projects and programs financed by the Bank.

During this mission, meetings are planned including field visits to two projects funded by AfDB a dredging site on River Niger and a multimedia centre.
