press release

Abuja - Nigeria — Regional Ministers of Infrastructure and Transport will meet in Accra on Friday, 1st April 2001 to agree a region-wide regulation on axle load, a set of measures to guide haulage of goods in order to protect Community infrastructure.

A draft regulation on the harmonization of the Axle Load Limitation was considered in Accra in August 2010 by experts and road transport stakeholders from ECOWAS Member States, with the purpose of equipping the region with necessary tools for the protection of our road infrastructure.

The one-day meeting of the ministers, who will be joined by those for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), will also approve the regulation defining the mission, mode of operation, the legal status and guidelines for the operation of the Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU).

The Regulation will equip the Lome- based PPDU with the legal tool to discharge its mandate of helping the region develop bankable regional integration projects and to provide transaction support to national structures in the development of regional infrastructure projects.

The meeting of the ministers will be preceded by that of experts. Also participating in the meeting are ECOWAS officials and professionals, representatives of development partners and other stakeholders.
