Niamey -Niger — Thirty-three persons are participating in a workshop for emergency response managers and specialists on the application of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in emergency response which opened on Monday, 23rd May 2011 in Niamey, Niger.
The five-day specialized training is part of an ongoing ECOWAS programme to generate a pool of regional expertise with the requisite skills for handling emergencies within the framework of the ECOWAS Emergency Response Team (EERT) whose members are drawn from Member States.
The workshop will enable the beneficiaries provide first line emergency humanitarian response during complex emergencies in the region using the satellite-based navigation system. The system will equip the managers and specialists with the capability to locate victims relying on a map and navigate in unknown terrains.
Beneficiaries of previous trainings have also been invited to participate in order to update their knowledge and as part of the continuous programme of training for this category of personnel which is jointly organized by ECOWAS and the UN High Commission for Refugees. This is part of a long-standing training programme by both institutions to enhance the emergency response capacity of Member States.
The programme involves the organization of systematic training workshops for EERT managers and specialists in different fields of humanitarian intervention to assist them attain full capacity for eventual deployment during emergencies in the region.
