Praia, Cape Verde — The President of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency James Victor Gbeho, has called on the Government and people of Cape Verde to uphold their enviable culture of political maturity that the country has become widely respected for, as they prepare to elect a new President on Sunday, 7th August 2011.

Ambassador Gbeho made the appeal while addressing journalists on arrival in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde on Saturday, 6th August 2011 to join the 80- member Election Observer Mission deployed in the nine habitable islands of the country.

He assured that ECOWAS and the international community would support the people of Cape Verde "in the arduous but noble journey of leading other Member States in developing a culture of democracy throughout West Africa".
