Accra — A consultative meeting to consider the report on the review of progress on Sustainable Development in West Africa opens in Accra, Ghana on Tuesday, 27th September 2011. Organized by the ECOWAS Commission in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the two-day meeting will examine the draft regional review report elaborated with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The report reviewed Priority Sustainable Development Issues, Trends and Inter- linkages, as well as Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development in the region, concrete actions taken highlighting best practices, progress made, achievements, challenges and constraints. It also considered on-going attempts to transit towards a green economy within the context of poverty reduction and sustainable development in the region, new and emerging issues and proposals on the way forward.
The Accra gathering is one of the preparatory meetings organized by Africa's Regional Economic Communities (RECs) ahead of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development planned for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2012 to avail Member States the opportunity to discuss mechanisms for improving the implementation of sustainable development in the region. A regional preparatory meeting will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 20th to 25th October 2011.
