ECOWAS Supports Ivorian Peace Process With U.S.$300,000

Abidjan - Cote d' Ivoire — The ECOWAS Commission has donated 300,000 US dollars in support of the peace and reconciliation efforts in Cote d'Ivoire.

Presenting the cheque to the Chairman of the Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Mr. Charles Konan Banny, on 15th February 2012, the ECOWAS Special Representative to Cote d'Ivoire, Ambassador Oluwole Coker, said the financial support was a demonstration of the regional Organization's solidarity with Cote d'Ivoire and towards facilitating the national reconciliation process.

On behalf of the Ivorian Government, Mr. Banny expressed his gratitude to the ECOWAS Commission for the financial assistance. He also seized the opportunity to appeal to Ivorian businessmen to key into the reconciliation process, adding that an investment in the reconciliation effort was an investment in national peace. Since the outbreak of the Ivorian crisis in 2002, ECOWAS has been involved in finding solutions as well as providing material and diplomatic support.

In August 2011, the President of the Commission, His Excellency James Victor Gbeho led a mission to Abidjan for talks with Ivorian authorities on the country's urgent needs for post-conflict reconstruction and national reconciliation.
