AfDB Partnerships Make Remarkable Progress in 2011

The partnerships and cooperation unit (ORRU) recorded notable results in 2011 in moving the Bank's partnership network towards a green and inclusive growth in Africa. During the year, the Unit mobilized a total of USD 127 million new grant resources, of which USD 112 million were for thematic funds and USD 15 million for single donor funds.

This revelation was made by Kazumi Larhed, head of the partnerships and cooperation unit in her presentation on Thursday 22 March 2012 at the ongoing trust fund forum at the Hotel Ramada Plaza in Gammarth. Mrs Larhed also revealed that as of March this year her unit is administering a total of 320 ongoing trust fund operations for a cumulative amount of USD 421 million.

She noted that during the year under review the unit established new thematic funds including the South-South cooperation trust fund for which Brazil has approved USD 6million while other donors are being mobilized. Denmark pledged USD 57 million to the sustainable energy unit for Africa.

The unit is actively mobilizing other donors is another thematic fund set up in 2011. Mrs Larhed also mentioned the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Switzerland which in 2011 joined the African Water Facility and Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative for USD 12 million and USD 20 million respectively.

The head of ORRU further outlined what her unit is doing in the areas of technical assistance and capacity building grant funds to implement greenfield microfinance institutions in Liberia, Tanzania and Nigeria and elsewhere.

In conclusion, Mrs Larhed said the vision of her unit is: "to develop and mobilize more flexible menu of instruments to meet the emerging and diversifying needs of our client countries in collaboration with partners and to position AfDB as a transformational global connector."

Acting vice president in charge of country and regional programs and policy, Janvier K Litse opened the two-day forum which brought together more than 200 participants from the Bank's bilateral and multilateral cooperation network.
