ECOWAS Extra-Ordinary Summit in Abidjan On Situation in Mali

26 March 2012
press release

Abidjan — An extra-ordinary summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government will take place in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on Tuesday, 27th March 2012 to discuss the political situation in Mali following the 22nd March 2012 military coup d'état that ousted the elected government of President Ahmani Toumani Toure.

The summit followed a strong statement by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency Kadre Desire Ouédraogo, condemning the "usurpation of power by the military junta" barely a month to the conduct of scheduled presidential elections in the country.

The statement noted that the action of the military was not only a violation of the regional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, but has also isolated the coup makers from the Community. The President therefore called on the coup makers to "immediately hand over power to the rightful government so that the country can return to constitutional normality."

The one-day summit will decide additional measures for the restoration of constitutional order in Mali, where the government had been battling rebel attacks in the country's Sahel region.
