ECOWAS Commiserates With Nigeria Over Devastating Floods

15 October 2012
press release

Abuja - Nigeria — The ECOWAS Commission wishes to commiserate with the Government and people of Nigeria over the devastating floods that have claimed lives and caused substantial damage to property in different parts of the country.

The Commission sympathizes with families and institutions that lost loved ones and belongings. The Commission stands by Nigerians in this difficult moment and will do whatever is necessary to help mitigate the sufferings caused by this environmental disaster, which has also caused similar humanitarian devastations in a number of Member States of our community.

This phenomenon is not only disturbing but a wakeup call for intensification of proactive remedial actions at national, regional and international levels for effective preventive, management, control and mitigation measures against environmental disasters and the consequences of climate change in our region. This is particularly compelling considering the magnitude and widespread occurrence of flooding in Member States this year.
