Cape Town — Apple and Samsung gadgets have been the talk of the year 2012 and it wasn't a surprise when Google released their Year-End Zeitgeist and found the two company products amongst the top searched gadgets in Uganda.
In Uganda's trending gadgets and phones, are Samsung Galaxy s3, iPad 3, iPhone 4s.
The two brands garnered even more attention when they became embroiled in a legal battle where Apple sued Samsung, accusing it of copying the iPhone and iPad.
Samsung eventually lost out and had to pay U.S.1-billion to Apple for copyright infringement.
And the pre-occupation with their mobile devices and technology continued, with Waptrick topping the most-searched - a website promising "a huge collection of mp3 ringtones, mobile games, phone apps, live wallpapers, themes, mobile videos, video clips and many more for free".
The most-searched person is Whitney Houston, an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model who passed away in February 2012.
As she was one of the world's best-selling music artists, Uganda joined the world in mourning.
Ebola came third in the "trending events" category, and the more universal searches in this category were the Euro 2012 and Olympics in first and second position. The outbreak of the deadly viral haemorrhagic fever had hit Uganda three times, killing dozens of people.
Kony 2012, a short film, spread virally in Uganda making it come fourth in the "trending events" category.
The film was created for the purpose of promoting the "Stop Kony" movement to make Ugandan militia leader, indicted war criminal and International Criminal Court fugitive Joseph Kony globally known in order to have him arrested by the end of 2012, the time when the campaign expires.
On a lighter note, Ugandans went looking for love when they searched for "what is love?" in the "What is ..." category.
