Abuja - Nigeria — The Chiefs of Defence Staff and Inspector Generals of Police of troop/police contributing countries to the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea Bissau (ECOMIB), are to meet in Bissau, on Monday, 27th May, 2013 for the official hoisting of the mission's flag.
The security officials will also discuss the challenges confronting the mission as well as the status of implementation of the Defence and Security Sector Reform Programme (DSSRP) in Guinea Bissau.
Regional leaders at their Summit in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire on 28th February 2013 welcomed the implementation of the DSSRP in Guinea Bissau within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the country and ECOWAS and directed the President of the ECOWAS Commission to take all appropriate measures to facilitate and sustain its implementation.
Among its functions, the 629-strong ECOWAS mission is to replace the Angolan military personnel in Guinea Bissau, support the restoration of constitutional rule, provide security for VIPs and guarantee the freedom of movement of humanitarian agencies in the country, ahead of the planned DSSRP programme.
The troop/police contributing countries to ECOMIB are Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Togo and Senegal.
