President of West Africa Network of Farmers Pays Courtesy Visit to AfDB Vice-President Abou - Sabaa

Mamadou Cissokho, Honorary President of the Network of Farmers and Agricultural Producers Organisations of West Africa (ROPPA), paid a courtesy visit to Aly Abou-Sabaa, Vice-President of the African Development Bank (AfDB)'s Sector Operations (OSVP), in charge of Governance, Agriculture and Human Development,on Thursday, July 18, 2013.

Their discussions focused primarily on the challenges and opportunities of Africa's transformation in agricultural production. Abou-Sabaa and Cissokho both emphasized that a transformation of Africa's agricultural sector is critical for the continent's successful structural transformation.

Their meeting took place on the heels of a two-day workshop to review a study on the changing environment of West Africa's agricultural sector. The study, "Agricultural Growth in West Africa: Market and Policy Drivers", found that transformation in the agricultural sector is sluggish and supply has not been able to meet the growing demand for food in the region. It concludes that these challenges also constitute opportunities for differentiated and value-added agricultural production within a developing market.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) produced the study in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The three institutions will develop a series of policy briefs as part of the follow-up actions as well as present the study at the 4th International Conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, to be held in Tunisia, from September 23 to 25, 2013.
