In her lecture, Assistant Secretary Thomas-Greenfield will discuss the Obama Administration’s priorities with respect to U.S. policy vis-à-vis the continent of Africa and her recent trip to Nigeria.

His Excellency Professor Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye, Ambassador to the United States from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will introduce Assistant Secretary Thomas-Greenfield. “We are pleased to host this program at the Embassy,” stated Ambassador Adefuye. “It further demonstrates the positive state of relations between Nigeria and the United States. It is also timely for just one week ago, Assistant Secretary Thomas-Greenfield led the U.S. delegation to the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission meeting in Abuja.”

According to Bernadette Paolo, Africa Society President and CEO, “no matter what rank is ascribed to Linda Thomas-Greenfield--Assistant Secretary, Director General or Ambassador--she not only meets expectations, she exceeds them. She is a consummate diplomat with over 30 years of experience who we are proud to feature.”

Prior to assuming her current position in 2013, Assistant Secretary Thomas-Greenfield served as the Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources in Washington. From 2008 to 2012, Thomas-Greenfield served as Ambassador to Liberia. She was Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of African Affairs from 2006 to 2008 and Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration from 2004 to 2006. She has also worked at the Department of State’s Bureau of Human Resources. Her other overseas postings were in Jamaica, Nigeria, The Gambia, Kenya, Pakistan and Switzerland.

Now in its twelfth year, the Ambassador Andrew Young Lecture Series features distinguished speakers whose work has influenced and advanced awareness of U.S.-Africa relations. Named in honor of the former Chairman of The Africa Society Board, the Series was launched in 2002.

The Ambassador Andrew Young Lecture Series in 2014 is being sponsored by Chevron.
