Addis Ababa — The Land Policy Initiative (LPI) and the National Committee of the Rural Code of Niger will organize a "Validation workshop of the report on promising practices on land use planning for securing land rights for rural producers." The workshop will be held on 22 April 2014 in Niamey, Niger, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The workshop will be followed by a land policy training session, held from 23 to 25 April 2014.
The overall objective of the workshop is to examine, discuss and validate the results of the report on promising practices in land use planning. This report aims to improve the knowledge of stakeholders in Niger land development, and to facilitate the development of land use and planning process at the regional level in Niger.
The validation workshop will be structured around a series of presentations, discussions and group work. It is expected that the workshop will also make recommendations for the implementation of a roadmap for effective development of local land use plans in Niger.
More than 30 participants representing the government, support organizations working in land and natural resource management, the private sector, research organizations, and organizations of producers in Niger will take part in the workshop. Experts from Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Tanzania will participate in the workshop in order to exchange experiences and contribute to knowledge building in land policy and land management.
The report on promising practices in land development is part of a two-year project designed by the LPI/SDC, aiming at facilitating the implementation in Niger of the Declaration of the African Union on land issues in Africa, to strengthen security of tenure for all land users, especially small farmers, women, and pastoralists.
The Land Policy Initiative is a joint programme of the tripartite consortium consisting of the African Union Commission (AUC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Its mandate is to facilitate the implementation of the AU Declaration on Land Issues and Challenges in Africa.
