Cape Town — The interim leader of Burkina Faso, Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, has dismissed the African Union's two-week deadline to hand power to civilians.

BBC reports that Zida said they are "not afraid of sanctions, we care much more about stability" after talks with opposition parties and civil society.

The leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) had earlier agreed on the immediate lifting of the suspension of the constitution and holding of presidential and legislative elections within 12 months in Burkina Faso.
