Washington, DC — AllAfrica Global Media is marking its 15-year anniversary with the launch of the AllAfrica Awards on Friday April 17th, 2015 in Washington DC.

The work of three leading African figures will be recognized: H.E Macky Sall, president of Senegal; Dr. Donald Kaberuka, president of the African Development Bank; and Maria Kiwanuaka, former minister of finance, planning and economic development and senior advisor to the president of Uganda.

The three, selected by Africans and friends of Africa, represent leadership in strategic planning for economic development; for mobilizing development financing; and for championing inclusive economic growth, peace and security. The awards presentation will be preceded by an interactive discussion on the theme: 'Reimagining Africa: Giving Birth to the Africa We Want'.

President Macky Sall will receive the Economic Leadership Award in recognition of his envisioning and direction of the Emerging Senegal Plan (Plan Senegal Emergent).

"The World Bank describes Senegal's plan as an 'ambitious program that prioritizes diversification' and aims to increase the productivity of both the public and private sectors," said Reed Kramer, CEO of AllAfrica Global Media, which operates the news platform allAfrica.com and allAfrica.fr.

"Africa's development experts know that bold and ambitious initiatives and investments are required to unlock the potential of ordinary people across the continent and to create the opportunities and prosperity that all people should enjoy. Senegal is striving to show leadership, especially for Francophone Africa, in making those investments."

President Donald Kaberuka will accept the Champion Award in recognition of his relentless efforts over the past ten years as head of the premiere continental financial institution.

"Donald Kaberuka represents the type of leader needed for our African institutions and for our countries," said AllAfrica Executive Chair Amadou Mahtar Ba. "He has demonstrated consistent courage and determination to transform the bank and the continent."

Maria Kiwanuka will receive the Patriot Award for her advocacy of inclusive growth and development in Uganda. "She has stressed the centrality of peace and security for achieving human aspirations, as well as for financial transparency. She has been cited inside Uganda and internationally for her work towards accountability in the use of government funds intended to serve the people."

African finance ministers and ambassadors and American government, civil society and private sector leaders are expected to attend the event.
