From March 21-24, 2016, the Malawi Government launched the national Community of Practice as part of the African Community of Practice on Managing for Development Results (AfCoP-MfDR). AfCoP-MfDR has been funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) since its launching in 2007. The Malawi government pledged its commitment to adopting Results Based Management as a strategy to implement its country National Development Plan.

During the event, government officials, parliamentarians, representatives from the private sector, civil society organisations, academia, youth and women's groups examined the country's performance in achieving development results. The adoption of MfDR principles is expected to create long-term and large-scale impact in subsequent development projects. The country has benefitted from its MfDR readiness assessment to ensure its capacity to implement MfDR.

The Afrik4R Initiative, the AfCoP flagship programme through which a set of activities are being implemented in 17 countries including Malawi, is being instrumental in supporting the process of internalizing the benefits of MfDR, thereby promoting a results-culture. This will further enhance governance and accountability, leading to better communication across ministries and among development stakeholders in Malawi. The Country Readiness Assessment has been reviewed and validated and accountability on achieving development results discussed and enacted. The subsequent High Level Workshop under the aegis of the Chief Secretary increased leadership in conducting the process, as the first pillar of Managing for Development Results.

Launched in 2007, the African Community of Practice (AfCoP) is a coalition of over 4,000 development leaders and practitioners from 68 countries globally. Its objectives are to share lessons learnt, experiences and best practices on Managing for Development Results (MfDR) in Africa. AfCoP members work for African governments, civil society, and as independent experts in the field. The African Development Bank (AfDB), in partnership with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), is supporting AfCoP in mainstreaming MfDR on the continent.
