Mozambique: Quake Shakes Central Province

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale was recorded late on Thursday, September 22, in the southern province of Manica, in central Mozambique, according to Verdade.co.mz.

The website reported that the epicenter was located in "a secluded place" but residents of Beira and Chimoio said they felt a "slight tremor."

The earthquake, according to US Geological Survey (USGS), occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers at 22hrs 06min and 12 seconds, and had its epicenter in Machaze district near the Sabi River.

A reporter for a community radio in Buzi district, near the site of the epicenter, said the region felt nothing, "perhaps because there are no high buildings".

In Beira, there are reports of several residents who woke up startled and fled their homes.
