Adesina Visits Mahatma Gandhi's Home in Ahmedabad, Extols His Exceptional Humanity

The President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has paid glowing tribute to India's preeminent statesman, Mahatma Gandhi, saying that his work and life continue to inspire people across countries and generations.

Adesina visited Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, the capital of the State of Gujarat, home of the late sage and foremost statesman on Sunday, April 2, 2017, the last day of a four-day official visit to India.

"Gandhi's work and life will continue to inspire people across countries and generations," Adesina wrote in the visitors' book after a guided tour of the modest house on an expansive compound where Gandhi and his wife, Kasturba, lived for 15 years.

"It is an honour that the 2017 Annual General Meeting of the AfDB is to be held at the Mahatma Mandir Conference and Exhibition Center named after this great man," he said.

Adesina tried to spin cotton using Gandhi's famous handloom under the guidance of Pretima S. Vora, the tour guide and communicator at the Gandhi Ashram.

He then posed for pictures beside Gandhi's portrait and took selfies with other visitors.

Adesina was in India on a four-day official visit for talks on cooperation between the Bank and Indian Government officials and business leaders. He also reviewed the state of preparations for the AfDB's 2017 Annual General Meetings to be held in Ahmedabad from May 22-26, 2017.

Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi on 30 January 1948.
