Ghana: 12 Million Subscribers Linked SIM to Ghana Card - Communication and Digitalization Minister

The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has disclosed that over 12 million Ghanaians have so far linked their Ghana cards to their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards.

This shows that citizens have understood the need for exercise, especially to sanitize the telecommunications environment.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful made this statement at the Consumer Forum on Telecommunications Services in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

Mrs Owusu-Ekufful added that the SIM card registration exercise was one of the consumer protection initiatives which had the key objective of creating a safe and secured environment to enable people to use mobile SIM-activated devices with no fear of cyber-attacks.

"Most people access their internet through their mobile devices and we must ensure they do that safely. We must make it difficult for the criminals who hack our systems and defraud us through multiple online channels to operate."

She urged people who are yet to re-register their SIM cards with the Ghana card to do so before the end of 31st July 2022, as the deadline would not be extended.

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation in 2021 announced the registration of SIM cards with the Ghana card. The exercise was scheduled for 1st October 2021 to 31st March 2022. The initial deadline was however extended to 31st July 2022.
