Ghana: NLC Calls On Labour Groups to Exercise Restraint

14 October 2022

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has appealed to the four Unions that intend to embark on an industrial strike action to exercise restraint.

The Commission requests the parties, University Teachers' Association of Ghana, (UTAG), Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), to engage within one week on the terms of payment and other related matters and report back to the Commission.

A press statement issued by the Commission requests the parties to engage on Friday 14th October 2022 and Monday 17th October 2022.

The statement stated that the complainants submitted that they served notice to embark on strike due to the government's failure to implement some negotiated and agreed allowances; namely, fuel, vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances.

"According to UTAG, the government has not heeded their call to have these allowances paid to their members and hence, the decision to embark on strike," it emphasised.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FWSC speaking on behalf of the government stated that the fuel allowance had been worked on and currently there are ongoing discussions over the payment of the vehicle maintenance allowance and off-campus allowance.

He, therefore, prayed for time to continue with the engagement and report back to the Commission.

The complainants were led by the President of UTAG with representation from the other Teacher Unions.

The government was represented by officials from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), and Ministry of Finance (MOF).

The case has been adjourned to Wednesday 19th October 2022 at 3:00 p.m.
