The Convention People's Party (CPP), has urged the Electoral Commission (E.C) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to harmonise their data expeditiously to ensure eligible voters are not disenfranchised.

It noted that the voters' register had a lot of ghost names, and cleaning it had become a challenge and EC was being proactive to synchronise it with the Ghana Card towards the processes to clean the voters' register.

"Looking at the process today, there is also an issue of harmonisation of NIA data and that of EC's and both of them should step up their processes and see how best they can harmonise their data which makes it easier for all of us so that no one is disenfranchised," the party entreated.

Habeeb Yakubu, the Director of Elections for the CPP, stressed on the need for both of them to speed up their processes in the issuance of the Ghana Cards to ensure no one was disenfranchised for the 2024 elections.

He explained that the EC in a new Constitutional Instrument (CI) presented before Parliament, stipulated its intention to make the Ghana Card the sole guarantor document for the continuous registration of voters however, it was met with a lot of criticism from the Minority in Parliament and some other political parties.

But, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, disclosed there were possible sanctions for persons who had deliberately refused to take part in the SIM re-registration exercise with 28,959,006 SIM cards linked to Ghana Cards so far representing 67.28 per cent of the 42,749,662 total SIM cards issued nationally.

She said18, 930,664 SIM cards had been fully registered, representing 44.28 per cent of the total cards issued.
