Liberia: Monrovia-Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie, Resident Circuit Judge for Criminal Court 'A' Has Sentenced a 21-Year-Old Man to Life Imprisonment Having Been Found Guilty of Killing His Girlfriend in the Lprc Community in Gardnerville.

During the Sentencing Hearing on Thursday, March 9, 2023, Judge Willie upheld the unanimous guilty verdict brought down against the Penal Jurors at the beginning of this month.

The Court's sentence comes, after a pre-sentence investigation conducted by the Ministry of Justice, through its Division of Probation and Correction

The investigation has established that the defendant had no criminal record prior to the killing of his lover.

Though there was no evidence to prove that the Defendant committed the crime, the court held that it was not necessary for someone to take the life of another person.

Judge willie furthered that prosecution proved beyond all reasonable doubt that the crime of murder enhance the evidence adduced that it was enough to hold the Defendant guilty of the crime committed.

The sentence is in accordance with Chapter 50.4, Section 51.3 of the Penal Law of Liberia.

The Defendant was charged with the crime of murder and indicted on August 23, 2022, for killing his girlfriend.

He pleaded not guilty to the Crime of murder levied against him, thus joining issues with the state.

During the Trial, the prosecution 2produced four witnesses, while the defense counsel produced two witnesses.

At the call of Thursday's Sentence Hearing, the Defense Counsel filed a motion seeking for retrial, but the same was resisted and denied by the Honorable Court.

Meanwhile, the Defense Lawyer has taken exception to the Judge's ruling and announced an appeal before the Honorable Supreme Court of Liberia.
