Ghana: CSUC Admits More Females in Last Two Academic Years

The Christian Service University College in Kumasi has in the last two academic years admitted more females than males at the undergraduate level.

Whereas in the 2021/ 2022 academic year, 176 females against 156 males were admitted, in the 2022/2023 academic year, the school admitted 272 females as against 204 males.

At the matriculation policy, the President of the University College, Prof. Sam Afrane, pointed out that this is a deliberate policy to systematically encourage female education at the tertiary to reduce gender imbalance in the society.

He said the institution will pursue policies that would motivate and encourage the females to complete their education and pursue higher academic studies to reduce gender disparities in academic circles.

He pointed out that this is informed by the fact that whilst more females pursue undergraduate studies, at the graduate level, the males far outnumber the females and indicated that 134 and 139 male graduate students enrolled in the corresponding academic years as against 52 and 65 female graduate students respectively for the two academic years.

Prof.Afrane accordingly appealed to the females not to feel intimidated by their male counterparts and to focus on their studies because they had been admitted on merit, not a favour.

He said at the tertiary level many things appear to be done collectively, but explained that students have individual responsibility and they must thus be so guided in their actions.

Prof.Afrane reminded them that they are in the age of technology and the internet but they must note that technology is not neutral and therefore they must strive to let technology serve their functional needs rather that become subservient to technology.

He explained that as a university founded on sound Christian principles, students will be offered moral and ethical training but whether the training would be beneficial or otherwise depends on how students submit themselves and imbibe the Christian and moral principles.

Prof. Afrane assured the students that the institution was making every effort to receive a charter so that it could be an independent, autonomous and full-fledged university.

Currently, the Christian Service University College is affiliated to both the University of Ghana and University of Cape Coast.
