The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has recalled Members from recess for a one-day emergency sitting.

A recall instrument signed by Mr Bagbin, said the Members of Parliament (MPs) are to report to the legislative assembly on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, to consider "urgent parliamentary business."

"In the exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by Order 42(3) of the Standing Orders of Parliament of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding to the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 10 O'clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider urgent parliamentary business," the instrument, dated April 20, 2023, and signed by the Speaker said.

The order states that "the Speaker May, if he thinks fit, call a Sitting of the House before the date or time to which it has been adjourned or at any time after the House has been adjourned sine die."

It is unclear why MPs are being recalled to cut short their recess, but the Speaker indicated on the day of recess his willingness to recall MPs to finish the business of the just gone by meeting, which ended on March 31.

The Speaker's assurance was in response to the determination by the Majority caucus to have a loan agreement approved before the House rose sine die on April 1.

But, the Minority rejected the decision by the Majority, arguing that long sitting hours were not good for their health; an argument the Speaker upheld.

"I am prepared to recall parliament to come and consider these loan agreements between 14th and 15th of April," he indicated.
