Abidjan, May 11, 2023 (ECA) - The Ministry of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Diaspora of Côte d'Ivoire, initiated today, in collaboration with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the final workshop for the creation of a national mechanism for the recognition migrant skills in Côte d'Ivoire.

The meeting seeks to present participants with a national mechanism for the recognition of migrant workers’ skills which involves multiple actors and institutions.

Cooperation, collective and concerted actions by all stakeholders are the most appropriate ways of managing migration issues, said Kouyate Abdoulaye, Deputy Chief of Staff at the Ministry of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Diaspora.

Establishing a national mechanism for the recognition of migrants’ skills will allow for an improved management of migration dynamics in the country, said Samia Hamouda, an expert at the ECA Office in North Africa.

The meeting is being held on 11-12 May in Abidjan, in partnership with the Ministry’s General Directorate for the Mobilization of Diaspora Skills and Resources (DMCRD) and with the participation of about fifty officials including representatives of ministries and institutions working on migration issues in Côte d'Ivoire. Private sector, universities, and civil society representatives will also be taking part in this event.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) adopted in Marrakech (Morocco) in December 2018 tasked the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) with supporting its Member States with its implementation, monitoring, and updates.

Côte d'Ivoire is a popular destination for migrants and is considered to be a country of destination in West Africa, hence the need for improved coordination, to better manage migration flows and the economic and social integration of migrants.

This event is being organized as part of an ECA project supporting five African Member States in addition to Côte d'Ivoire: Morocco in North Africa; Mali and Senegal in West Africa; and South Africa and Zimbabwe in Southern Africa.
