The Government has earmarked a 30,000-acre land for the establishment of an Agro-Industrial Processing Zone in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region.

The initiative forms part of a 10-point development agenda to create industrial zones in all the 16 regions of the country.

A Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr. John H. Asiedu, disclosed this when he led a team of consultants to call on the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, on Thursday in Bolgatanga.

According to Dr Asiedu, their feasibility studies shows that the project would create economic activities along the Eastern Corridor Road.

He said the initiative forms part of the Eastern Corridor Road Project with a loan facility of US$500, 000 from the African Development Bank for feasibility studies.

He added that the objective of the project was to decongest the concentration of industries in the southern Ghana, and evenly distribute factories across the country.

On her part, a Senior Urban Planner-Eco-Industrial Parks from Mahindra Consulting Engineers, Ms. U. Sangeetha, said the ongoing feasibility studies seeks to guide them to develop a master plan.

This, she said, would help them to assess the natural resources to enable them site industrial parks along the Eastern Corridor Road from Volta through Oti Region to Kulumgugu in the Upper East Region.

She added that Agricultural Transformation Centres would be created in each region to provide mechanization support to farmers to increase their production.

The Director of Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, Alhaji Inusah Abubakari, who received the team on behalf of the Regional Minister, described the project as a good initiative.

He urged the Consultants to consider the Out -Grower concept to stop the importation of crops such as tomatoes that could be produced at cheaper cost in the region but are currently imported from Burkina Faso.
