Liberia: Western Cluster Limited Initiates Clean-Up Campaign in Bomi, Calls On Citizens to Own the Process

Tubmanburg — Western Cluster Limited over the weekend collaborated with the City Council of Tubmanburg in observance of first Saturday cleaning up campaign.

Although not legislated, when Madam Mary T. Broh served as Mayor of Monrovia, she declared every first Saturday of the month as general clean-up day.

It is in this direction that the Western Cluster Limited, seeing the need to give Tubmanburg, its operation headquarters a facelift, collaborated with the City Council for a massive clean-up campaign on Saturday, June 3.

Citizens were seen in hard gear with their working tools along the roadside, market places and in the communities brushing and picking plastic wastes.

Speaking to reporters when he launched the campaign, the head of Western Cluster Limited, Chetan Savant said the mining company saw the need to work with the people of the county in keeping the area clean.

Savant spoke of the need for citizens to properly dispose their garbage and as well limit the use of plastic.

He highlighted that plastic waste is dangerous to human and aquatic lives.

According to him, when plastic waste is not properly managed, it poses serious threat to the survivability of humans, animals, and aquatic dwellers.

"Plastic is harmful for human beings, plastic is harmful for animals, plastic is harmful for ocean life," he said.

According to him, the huge dumping of plastic in waterways is damaging ocean life.

He promised that Western Cluster Limited will keep collaborating with the county in keeping their environment clean.

The Mayor of Tubmanburg, Varney Keh, speaking to reporters, said: "I am happy. When it comes to clean-up, this is their first time to join us. They have been joining us in many other initiatives."

Mayor Keh said the collaboration took him by surprise because when he visited Western Cluster Limited for a proposed football tournament, he met Savant and told him verbally about the Saturday's cleanup campaign and he consented to join.

He noted that it was the first of its kind for the company to joined the city in a major clean-up campaign, an initiative he stated that he is grateful to the company for.

Like Savant, Sup. Keh called on citizens to ensure their garbage are managed well.

He mentioned that the US$75,000 provided by Western Cluster will be used to purchase Kia Motor and tricycle to aid the Tubmanburg City Government to manage its waste properly.

"The collaboration with Western Cluster is a serious boost to the city government," he said with a big laughter across his face.

Pointing to one of the City government's workers who was carrying a garbage in a wheelbarrow, the mayor said with the money provided by Western Cluster Limited, they as a city government will soon graduate from the manual method of disposing their waste.

Abraham Green, a citizen of the county who was seated in a wheelchair said, "It is a very good thing seen people taking initiative."

Asked for his own contribution, Mr. Green said, "My contribution is to start from my home."

He said he will help educate his children and citizens about the proper disposal of garbage.

Siah T. Johnson encouraged the city government to provide garbage bin in public places for the proper disposal of garbage in the city.
