Gambia: Track Queen Gina Bass Breaks Her Record, Qualify for Two Championships

Track Queen Gina Bass Sunday broke the national record she set at 11:06 after competing in the women's 100m in Switzerland, as she clocked a 11:05 timing at the Swiss race.

The Gambian international athlete sensation has thus qualified for the Paris Olympics and the World Athletics Championships.

Bass will be going to her third consecutive Olympics Games after Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020. His third will be in Paris in 2024.

"Bass confirmed this after running 11:05 seconds at the World athletics continental challenge in Switzerland (Resisprint International) on July 2nd 2023. The IAAF set 11:07 standard time for 100m (women) starting July 1st 2023," the Gambia National Olympic Committee stated on its social media platform.

"The timing also gave Bass a ticket to the World Athletics Championship in Budapest next month.

"Bass is the first athlete ever from Gambia to have reached the final at a World Championships; an achievement that gave her the confidence to then go on and cap her terrific 2019 campaign by collecting victory at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco; as well as setting three national records."

Meanwhile, Ebrahima Camara sets another Personal Best in France in the 100m running 10.23 in heats and 10.16 to win the men's 100m race and break the meeting record in France.

"The national record holder of 100m is in very good shape with the world championship approaching. Other athletes that competed include our own team captain Adama Jammeh and Alieu Joof who ran a PB of 10:29," the Gambia Athletic Association stated.
