The African Development Bank Group will hold a two-day inception workshop on Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (Phase II) from 6-7 September 2023, at its Nigeria Country Department Office in Abuja. The workshop is the first in a series of stakeholder engagement activities designed to collect input and harmonise various interests ahead of commencement of the second phase of the SAPZ Program in Nigeria.

In October 2022, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the African Development Bank alongside co-financing partners, the Islamic Development Bank and IFAD, launched the first phase of the $538 million Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme in Nigeria. The first states under phase I of the programme (Cross River, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo), have met all conditions for disbursement and are progressing rapidly.

Already, 22 states that have submitted expressions of interest will be hosted and assessed for onboarding onto the second phase of the programme. They include Lagos, Anambra, Benue, Ekiti, Delta, Gombe, Ondo, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Bayelsa, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Enugu, Osun, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Borno.

The African Development Bank is developing SAPZs in 11 African countries in 24 sites. The SAPZ programme in Nigeria is the largest, both in scale and scope.
