The African Development Bank in collaboration with partners will host a Pharmaceutical Investment Forum at Waldorf Astoria in Heliopolis on 9 October 2023.

The forum aims to explore the financing options required for transformative pharmaceutical industry projects in Egypt. This exclusive forum will offer leading Egyptian pharmaceutical firms the opportunity to learn more about the African Development Bank's pharmaceutical plan, financial offerings and co-financing opportunities to support Egypt to reach its potential as a pharmaceutical hub in Africa.

Egypt has a significant potential in the pharmaceutical sphere as the largest producer and consumer of medicines in the MENA region. The value of the country's pharmaceutical market is estimated to be worth over $56 billion, and medicine exports generate $400 million to the economy, signaling the country's importance in both African and global value chains.

The forum will also provide a platform for direct business to business meetings and networking opportunities between key sector players and financing institutions. The Egyptian African Businessmen's Association is a co-organizer of the event. The Islamic Development Bank, IQVIA, Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and PATH, are some of the organizations expected to attend.

In addition, a series of Pharmaceutical Investment Clinics (PICs) will take place on 9 and 10 October following the forum. The investment clinics, an innovative business development approach, will enable the African Development Bank and partners to identify strategic regional champions and bankable pharmaceutical projects to fast-track the development of a strong investment pipeline. The PICs will include companies that meet 11 project eligibility and readiness criteria. During the PIC, the project sponsor will present the business case for deliberation.

Through a partnership approach that incorporates co-financing with commercial banks and other players, the African Development Bank is exploring ways to support impactful pharmaceutical industry programs in Egypt through the provision of financing, high level advisory services on market access in Africa and technical assistance in the preparation of bankable projects. Egyptian manufacturers have recently entered into mergers or made greenfield investments aimed at expansion into other African countries.

The African Development Bank is prioritizing the pharmaceutical industry sector for business development and investments. It plans to invest up to $3 billion in the sector through 2030.
