Kenya: Kiambu Court Acquits Mike Sonko of Assault Charges

Nairobi — Kiambu Court has acquitted Mike Sonko of assault in a case stemming from a 2019 raid on a private property in Buruburu, Nairobi.

Sonko was accused of assault causing actual bodily harm, in contravention of Section 251 of the Penal Code on May 25, 2019, at Buruburu Phase 4 in Kamukunji Sub-County within Nairobi county.

The prosecution, in a case filed in 2021, accused the former Nairobi Governor of unlawfully leading a group of men in assaulting multiple individuals, including Evans Obaga, George Chege, Paul Kahiga, Charles Karori, Alex Kioko, Stephen Ouma, Musyoki Kavunda, John Mungai Wanjiru, and Joel Kinja Muthui.

The charge was presented in multiple counts, indicating multiple instances of assault.

Sonko welcomed the acquittal on Monday terming his numerous court battles as a stepping stone to the "future".

"I've always insisted that you should never give up because God doesn't give His hardest battles to His toughest soldiers. He creates the toughest soldiers out of life's hardest battles," he said.
