Top Senegalese Opposition Leader Released Ahead of Elections

Thousands of supporters of Senegalese opposition leaders Ousmane Sonko and Bassirou Diomaye Faye rejoiced in Dakar as the pair emerged from prison, following their release announced on state channel RTS.

The news of their freedom came after weeks of political crisis triggered by President Macky Sall's attempt to delay the presidential election originally scheduled for February 25th.

The vote is now set for March 24th.

Sonko has consistently maintained that his imprisonment was a politically motivated ploy to bar him from the 2024 race. President Sall, who has governed Senegal since 2012, will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming polls.
