The Lagos State Government, in collaboration with Ports Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) has inaugurated a block of classrooms, furniture and other infrastructure that would enhance teaching and learning at Amuwo Odofin Junior High School, Mile 2 school complex.
Speaking at the inauguration and handover ceremony, the Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun commended the management of PTML for coming up with such extraordinary initiative that would benefit the community and transform the system.
"Education is about scaling up to global standard; and enhancing teaching and learning for teacher and students," he stated, while pledging that the facilities will be maintained and adequate teachers will be provided to enhance teaching and learning.
He promised that his ministry will ensure a clean and safe environment, adding that the teachers must take their work more seriously by ensuring that students learn various things at the right time.
The commissioner also advised the parents' forum to take their work of parenting seriously saying, "you have a long way to go. If you want a better environment, it is about good parenting. Whatever vices your children see at home, they replicate in the school."
The Managing Director, PTML, Mr. Ascanio Russo stated that the initiative was part of his organisation's corporate ethos and through collaborations, challenges would be transformed into growth and development especially for future generations.
Russo promised that his organisation's support to the school and community will continue.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, explained that the provision of infrastructure is never left in the hands of government alone, but in partnership with the private sector.
"It behoves on the private sector to carry out social responsibility and it is another thing for them to implement it particularly in Africa where most things work on paper. For PTML, it has gone beyond paper budgeting. It is a reality. Lagos State is not unmindful of the huge responsibility particularly in the education sector and that is why education is free across all levels in the state."
He disclosed that the state has paid over N1 billion for 2024 WASSCE of students, saying that poverty is not an excuse.
"PTML has ensured that facilities are provided. Partnership is what strengthens communities and I am sure the people of Amuwo Odofin will see PTML as worthy community member. They want to do everything possible to make sure that the facilities are well maintained."

He appealed to the principals, teachers and students to maintain and judiciously utilise the facilities.
"To whom much is given, much is expected. It is expected of you to take this facilities very seriously. Use them judiciously to better your understanding of what your teachers are teaching, especially for the students so that the government and private sector investments in education will not be in vain," he stated.
The Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government, Mr. Valentine Buraimoh stated that the initiative points to the fact that there is future in education, which is the legacy any parents can give to their children.
"We are proud of the initiative for our future leaders. If we don't provide the succour for them now, we may miss it along the line."
He commended PTML, saying that government cannot do it alone because they have numerous tasks in their hands.
