Nigeria: 'Your Time's Up, Jaji' - Constituents Initiate Recall Process Over Alleged 'Failed Promises'

18 May 2024

Abuja — The constituents of Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency have initiated a recall process against their representative in the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji.

The move came after a series of allegations against the lawmaker, including insensitivity, corruption, and failure to fulfil electoral promises.

According to sources, Hon. Jaji was accused of neglecting his duties as a representative, failing to provide adequate support to his constituents, and engaging in corrupt practices.

The lawmaker was also accused of factionalizing the party executives and supporting opponents of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in demarketing his policies and administration in the North.

The constituents, who have been mobilizing signatures in the two Local Government Areas, have concluded plans to address a formal letter to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Gusau, Zamfara State, and the Electoral officers for Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji Local Government Areas, requesting the commission to provide recall forms for the removal of the lawmaker from the lower chamber.

The recall process, which is provided for in Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, requires the signatures of more than one-half of the persons registered to vote in the constituency.

In a joint statement by Hon. Bello Mahmud Birnin Magaji, Chairman, and Comrade Mustapha Ibrahim, Secretary, of Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency Coalition For Sustainable Democracy, said: "We made a mistake by electing Hon. Jaji who uses our mandate to work against his constituency and APC at all levels while hobnobbing with the ruling PDP in the state where he has concluded plans to defect after destabilising our great party.

"As democrats and grassroots politicians, we shall resist reactionary forces bent on undermining our constituency.

"Hon. Jaji must be recalled from the House of Representatives to pave way for a competent, capable, reliable, pragmatic, visionary, resourceful and compassionate lawmaker. Join us to recall him now."

The constituents vowed to ensure that the process is successful, citing their determination to rescue their constituency from further slide into insecurity, anarchy, lawlessness, confusion, poverty, and underdevelopment.

As the recall process gathers momentum, many are watching with keen interest to see how it will play out.
