Nigeria: Delta State University Loses Associate Prof Giwa As NBA Mourns

Delta State University, Abraka (Oleh Campus) has lost one of its finest Associate Professor and law lecturer, Dr. Ayuba Giwa to the cold hands of death just as the Nigerian Bar Association mourns.

Details of the death of the Senior Lecturer are still sketchy, but social media is awash with posts by colleagues, friends, well-wishers and students that he died on Sunday.

Sources from Oleh Campus said that Giwa died in Abuja where he went for a medical checkup.

Late Giwa was an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He was a former Chairman, NBA Warri, had a doctoral degree in law/jurisprudence and was a former editor of the Nigerian Bar Journal.

Some Books published by the legal icon include "Equity and Trust in Nigeria" and "Essentials of Lawyering Skills in Africa".

Delta State University Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, reacting to the sad news, said: "I mourn his passing."

On his part, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje SAN, former NBA Chairman Warri said, "I received the news of Giwa's death as a rude shock.

"Giwa, a former NBA Chairman of Warri Bar is one of the finest gentlemen. We have indeed lost a great man, one who is principled and thorough. I am very sad at the moment.

"One of the finest gentlemen in the Nigerian Bar Association and Warri branch in particular. One of the qualities I admire in him is his frankness,courageous to speak his mind as he sees it no matter whose ox is gored.

"He is a detribalized Nigerian which endeared him to members of the NBA Warri branch that saw him through becoming chairman of the radio active branch of the Bar," he added.

Dr. A.C.E. Abuza, an Associate Professor at DELSU said, "It is very sad to be told about the death our dear Chief, former chairman, Doctor and Associate Professor of Law.

"He was a good barman and lecturer. May Allah rest his learned soul in his bosom peacefully until we shall meet to part no more. Adieu my leader, friend, colleague and brother."

A senior lawyer, Paul Onota Esq said, "My God! Can this really be true! Dr. Ayuba Giwa is dead? I can't believe it. It's truly very shocking! May his generous heart and gentle soul rest in perfect peace."

The deceased was buried on Sunday at Okpella in Edo State according to Islamic rites.
