Nigeria: Kano Mulls Light Rail to Ease Transportation Challenges

The Kano State Government has said it is developing a transport policy that will provide framework for current and future transportation decisions, including a light rail to ease transportation challenges in the state.

The commissioner for transportation, Engineer Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, told newsmen Wednesday that the policy will create an enabling environment for private sector participation in the state transportation economy.

Diggol said the rapid economic and urban growth in Kano has made the development of a transport policy imperative, part of which include rail mass transit, light rail transportation, water and air transportation, freight transportation and rural transportation.

He said the state government is making efforts to address transportation challenges on which economic growth depends, adding that the lack of easy access to markets and industries stagnates economic growth leading to widespread poverty.
