Nigeria: Fomwan Cleans National Mosque

The FCT chapter of the Federation of Muslim Women's Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has charged residents to see the responsibility of the cleanliness of the territory as a collective responsibility and not the sole responsibility of the government.

The Naiba Ameerah (Deputy Leader) of FOMWAN, FCT chapter, Hajiya Rashida Lawal, made the call on Saturday while leading a delegation of members who worked with the facility operators to clean the National Mosque, Abuja.

She said that the action of the organisation was part of the nationwide celebration of FOMWAN Week being observed throughout the federation.

She noted that, "The FCT is not as clean as people expect it to be. FOMWAN has started it. We cannot be waiting for the government to clean our environment for us. As much as possible, we should clean our environment by ourselves, and we have done that by giving an example today by going to the national Mosque."

She said the Jumah (Friday) service of the FOMWAN Week was coming up on Friday with the theme: "To Support Ourselves, Believe in Ourselves and be our Brother's Keeper".

She added that, "So, the cleaning of the National Mosque is to kick-start our programme, which is one of our humanitarian services. We started today (Saturday), we joined hands with the people that are cleaning the mosque to clean the mosque, and we are happy doing that."

Also, the Secretary, FOMWAN, FCT chapter, Hajiya Afusat Folasade Ayandiran, said cleaning of the mosque would continue as an example for other people to see, noting that it was not only to pray, "But we see what we can do as part of our contribution to our society.

"So, cleaning, humanitarian services, education and other programmes that FOMWAN is embarking on is what we are doing; at least as our contribution to society. Government cannot do everything, so, anything we do is to support the government and to create awareness for our people."
