Nigeria: Rivers Political Crisis Claims Policeman, Vigilante Member

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a policeman and a member of a local vigilante group during a clash between supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and that of the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, at Eberi, headquarters of Omuma local government area of the state.

The Command's spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, who disclosed this in a text message sent to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, said investigation had already been launched into the incident.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the incident occured following struggles by supporters of both political gladiators over the control of the local government secretariat on Tuesday following the expiration of tenure of the local government council chairman.

A source who pleaded anonymity told our Correspondent that no fewer than 10 persons were seriously wounded during the clash.
