Liberian Entrepreneur Fomba Trawally Honored in Global 'Creative Black' Awards

As part of the activities marking Black History Month, the Matcha Design Agency has spotlighted ten individuals for their exceptional creativity and accomplishments.

This annual event, known as the "Creative Black" Awards, recognizes remarkable black men and women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their fields despite facing numerous challenges. Among the honorees this year is Fomba Trawally, the chief executive officer of National Toiletries-Liberia, who has made significant strides in the business world.

Matcha Design Agency, a renowned full-service creative B2B agency specializing in web design, advertising, and branding, has a long-standing reputation for executing clients' visions with precision.

This year, as part of Black History Month, the agency unveiled its list of ten most creative black entrepreneurs, and Fomba Trawally was among those celebrated.

Trawally, one of Liberia's most distinguished businessmen, expressed his excitement and pride upon receiving the award. "To see this kind of recognition coming from an international organization is a significant achievement for us. We are thrilled to see the world acknowledging our efforts. This recognition is not just for me; it's for Liberia and Liberians," he said.

This accolade marks an unprecedented milestone for Liberia, showcasing the nation's potential and success on the global stage. Trawally described the award as incredible, emphasizing that it underscores Liberia's importance in the world. "This recognition means a lot. It signifies hard work and dedication," he noted.

Trawally expressed his gratitude to the Liberian media for their support over the years, which he credits for helping him reach this point. He encouraged other Liberians to work hard, highlighting that such efforts would put Liberia on the global map and attract investment. "Receiving an award motivates you to continue working hard, stay committed, and focus on what you're doing.

"This recognition will benefit Liberia in terms of investment, education, and other areas in the near future," he added.

Trawally's journey from a street vendor to a multi-millionaire is inspiring. He began his entrepreneurial career in Liberia with his mother, who sold peppers to support their family. Today, he is the CEO of National Toiletries Inc., Liberia's only established national toiletries company.

During the Liberian civil war, Trawally fled to the Gambia, where he stayed for two years. He returned to Liberia in 1991 with US$200 and officially established Kumba Beindu and Sons in 1992, named in honor of his late mother. The company rapidly grew to become Liberia's first successful self-built indigenous company, gaining national recognition and winning regional and international awards for its outstanding business services.

In 2008, former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf awarded Trawally for providing thousands of job opportunities for Liberians. His recognition in the "Creative Black" Awards places him alongside some of the world's most acclaimed personalities, including Oprah Winfrey, Ignatius Sancho (Britain's first-ever black entrepreneur), and former US First Lady Michelle Obama.

This year's other nominees include Steven Bartlett, Robert Reed Church, Anne-Marie Osawemwenze Ore-Ofe Imafidon MBE, Patrick E. Ngowi, Jason Njoku, and Raphael Sofoluke.
