The Advisory Committee on the full implementation of financial autonomy for the 16 local government areas of Taraba State has unveiled a blueprint aimed at transforming local government administration across the country.
The committee stated that it intends to develop a model of efficiency and innovation that sets a new standard for local governance, which other states of the federation can adopt.
The Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Peter Diah, revealed this during a sensitization exercise and interactive session with local government chairmen, heads of administration, and finance directors in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital.
He explained that the plan is designed to ensure that Taraba's local government areas lead the way in achieving effective financial independence for the third tier of government, which he described as vital for accelerated grassroots development.
According to him, "local government autonomy is a cornerstone of good governance that recognizes the unique needs and challenges of our communities and empowers you to make decisions that directly impact the lives of our local citizens.
"Our blueprint focuses on increasing internal revenue generation, efficient resource management, and community engagement.
"We also envision local government areas as catalysts for sustainable development. By exercising their powers responsibly and transparently, local government chairmen can foster a new era of good governance."
Rt. Hon. Diah also mentioned that the committee is working closely with local government officials to build capacity and provide the necessary support to ensure successful implementation.
He urged local government chairmen to embrace this new challenge as an opportunity to redefine the role of local government.
"This is your moment and an opportunity for you all to redefine the role of local government and demonstrate the transformative power of decentralized decision-making," Diah said.
"You must exercise your powers judiciously with transparency and accountability and must be ready to work closely with your traditional rulers and communities.
"You must also be ready to listen to their concerns and ensure that the resources and decision-making processes align with their needs, aspirations, and priorities.
"As this Advisory Committee works to establish the framework for implementing the Supreme Court's verdict for full financial autonomy to our local government areas, I urge you to actively engage, provide valuable insights, and collaborate with this committee for a smooth transition."
