Gaiya Moses, better known as Deemoe, has carved out a unique space in the music scene with his storytelling prowess in rap.
Reflecting on his journey, Deemoe shared, "I've always loved and enjoyed listening to music but never thought about creating music myself.
"It wasn't until I was sent to boarding school that I discovered my ability to write rhymes. Being homesick led me to find solace in writing down my emotions, which later evolved into structured rhymes and verses." He attributes his early exploration of poetry and rhyming to a class activity that sparked his interest in storytelling.
As he progressed in his musical career, Deempe found inspiration in the storytelling styles of his rap idols. "When I started rapping, I was heavily influenced by Eminem and Meek Mill. Eminem's fast verses and Meek Mill's storytelling mode shaped my approach to writing," he explained. Over time, Dee Moe realized that he was more drawn to storytelling, preferring slow songs that allowed for deeper narrative exploration. "I eventually understood that storytelling was where my passion truly lay," he noted.
Incorporating Afrobeats into his music has also been a significant part of his artistic evolution. Dee Moe said, "Seeing Afrobeats take over both Nigeria and the international scene inspired me to blend it with my rap style. It was an adventurous idea that showcased versatility and had strong marketing potential. I believe it was executed flawlessly." His fusion of genres reflects his innovative approach and willingness to explore new musical landscapes.
Pursuing a master's degree in music has been a milestone for Dee Moe, akin to winning a Grammy in his eyes. "Deciding to pursue a master's degree in music felt like I was giving myself a Grammy," he enthused. The academic journey, despite its challenges, has provided him with invaluable exposure and insights into the music industry. "This experience has completely changed my approach to music and made me consider further academic pursuits, like a PhD."
