The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has congratulated Edo Queens Football Club on their outstanding display at the 2024 WAFU-B Zonal Champions League qualifiers in Côte d'Ivoire.

Edo Queens displayed exceptional skill and resilience, securing a commanding 3-0 victory against Ainonvi FC of Benin Republic in the final in Abidjan on Friday.

The goals, scored by Suliat Abideen in the 45+2 minute, Emem Essien in the 59th minute, and an own goal by Elizabeth Ukandu in the 76th minute ensured the NWFL champions claimed the coveted title and earned the sole ticket to the finals.

"Edo Queens' victory is a testament to the growth and strength of women's football in Nigeria," said Nkechi Obi, Chairperson of the NWFL.

"Their performance was inspiring, and they have made the entire nation proud with their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship.

"Edo Queens have demonstrated that they are not only champions in Nigeria but also strong contenders on the international stage. We wish them continued success in the next phases of the competition."

Before emerging the 2024 WAFU-B champions - second Nigerian side to do so in history, they had previously won the Sheroes Cup, Betsy Obaseki Cup and the NWFL Premiership titles.

Obi also heaped praise on the Edo State Government for its support and investment in women's football, which has been instrumental in the team's success.

"The commitment of the Edo State Government to developing women's football has been evident in the success of Edo Queens. This victory is a reflection of their unwavering support," she added.

Looking ahead, the NWFL Chairman urged Edo Queens to prepare thoroughly for the upcoming finals, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus and determination.

"As we celebrate this win, it is crucial for Edo Queens to stay focused and prepare adequately for the finals. We believe they have what it takes to challenge for the ultimate glory," she concluded.

Following the zonal success, Edo Queens will be aiming to become the first West African side to win the Caf Women's Champions League title at its fourth edition later this year.
