Nigeria: Benue Vital Player in Nigeria's Export Landscape

27 August 2024

The Nigerian Shippers' Council (NSC) on Monday expressed optimism that Benue State has poised to become a vital player in Nigeria's export landscape following its rich agricultural potential.

Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers' Council, Barr. Akutah Ukeyima, who made this known at the stakeholder's workshop on packaging of export products stressed the important of the workshop on the packaging of export products for shippers in Benue State.

"Benue State is rich in natural resources and agricultural potential, boasting a variety of products that have significant export potential. From its rich agricultural produce, including yam, cassava, and rice, to its vast array of livestock, this state is poised to become a vital player in Nigeria's export landscape.

"However, to fully harness this potential, we must confront the challenges that hinder our success--including packaging. Packaging is much more than a means of wrapping products; it is a critical element in the export process. Effective packaging protects the integrity of goods, ensures compliance with international standards, and enhances marketability".

Ukeyima represented by the Director, Consumer Affairs Department, Glory Onojedo, added that in international trade, where Nigerian products are competing on a global stage, packaging serves as the first point of contact with consumers.

He stressed, "It communicates quality, safety, and brand identity. We have all heard the saying, 'You never get a second chance to make a first impression.'

"This holds particularly true in export. The right packaging can make a world of difference, influencing a buyer's decision and elevating our products' appeal in foreign markets.

"As shippers, we must ensure that the products we export comply with these regulations to avoid costly rejections and delays."

The NSC boss emphasised that it had become imperative to work together--government agencies, private sector participants, farmers, and exporters--to create a conducive environment for knowledge sharing and capacity building.

He noted to this end that the workshop serves as an opportunity for all stakeholders to exchange ideas and best practices regarding effective packaging as he further encourage participation from all participants to identify local challenges, share solutions, and collaborate on initiatives that promote innovation in packaging technologies and materials.

Ukeyima said, "It can bridge the gap between our local products and the international market, showcasing the richness of Benue State's offerings to the world. Together, we can position Benue and Nigeria as leaders in the global export arena.
